For the past four decades this Pilsen neighborhood has been a haven for artists' studios and up-start galleries. The neighborhood centers around the Halsted and 18th St. intersection, though it fans out to just west of the Dan Ryan Expressway, and extends to 16th Street on the north side and to Canalport on the south side. The expansive loft-style spaces, typical to the area, are enticing to artists who need larger work areas and bright natural light for their creative endeavors.

The neighborhood's studios and galleries band together and synchronize their art openings on the second Friday of each month. Free and open to the public, the gatherings often include complimentary wine and snacks. In addition to "2nd Fridays," the community hosts the "Annual Artists' Open House," an art walk and celebration happening the first weekend of October.
