In 1992, the same year that Woman Made Gallery opened its doors, the NEA released the finding that only 17 percent of works in U.S. galleries are by women, though 48 percent of the artists in the U.S are women. In the years since, Woman Made has hosted monthly exhibitions that highlight and raise the public profile of the work that women have contributed to the cultural landscape.
What’s cool about Woman Made is that it plans its events with the public in mind. In addition to eight annual group exhibitions that explore themes like spirituality, contemporary family issues, political investigations, Woman Made holds six solo shows, a holiday bazaar, poetry readings, beginning and advanced artist workshops and provides gallery space to more than 400 artists.
It cares what you think: Visitors are supplied with evaluation forms so they can give their take on the current showings. All exhibits are accompanied by lectures and artist workshops, where you’ll gain insight into the artist’s creative process, boost your understanding of gender issues and support a great cause. All group exhibitions are curated and juried by different professional women, both artists and non-artists.
