A phenomenon occurs daily inside of 6 Degrees, a
Bucktown social house opted as a place of choice for discussing the six degrees of separation theory. Take for instance our visit; we quietly observed a trio of handsome Michiganders stepping inside looking for dessert. No dessert, they settled for a round of cocktails, sharing background four-eleven on themselves with owner Ann Keefner. Turns out, she knew a mutual friend of theirs back in Grand Rapids, even proving it by uploading her Facebook friend's list.
Keefner lays the groundwork for guests seeking their own six-degree instance with framed black-and-whites of her and friends sharing good times adorned onto mint walls. Needless to say, before the gang of guys dashed, she snapped a photo of them promising them a spot on her display.
Away from the madness of the Wicker Park epicenter, the meetinghouse suits community-oriented folks preferring boutiques and eco-friendly businesses as neighbors versus the pop-up shops and hipster havens. The room is dim, not gloomy, rectangular and deep versus wide. Prettier than the average bar, attributes involve vases of fresh-cut flowers and a grand mirror netted with hardwood floors, French doors and cradling exposed brick. But the sports crowd manages fine with monthly beer specials, a couple flat screens tuned to the game and a plate of wings.
The menu, which Keefner describes as bar food with a healthy element, hovers in the price range appropriate for the area. Bar food includes burgers and the 6 Degrees Nachos, while healthy choices range from soups and Kate's Chef Salad: mixed greens with hummus-filled egg whites, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers and grilled chicken, named after Keefner's best friend. Drinks average between $6-$9 and include the ciracha-spiked Flaming Bloody Mary and Skinny Margaritas.
Food fanatics anticipate the Springfield-transplant Horseshoe sandwich comprised of Texas toast, meat (or veggies) and a cheese sauce recipe Keefner is working on perfecting for its menu debut. Expect live music and a killer beer garden coming soon as well.
