Contrary to its name, Elm Street Liquors is not your neighborhood package store, though like that sketchy spot you buy a six-pack from, it does have a few dive qualities. But, hey, we're in the Gold Coast, where it's only fitting that a nondescript exterior belies a dive that's plenty upscale.
You may not think much of the spacious and minimalist bar/lounge at first glance, with its 35-foot bar, washed walls and regulars sipping beer. Go further into the space, though, and you'll notice posh patrons sipping designer drinks served in flutes (there's nary a martini glass in sight). Head to the back room and you'll realize you're in a chic and trendy haven, with fashion-forward clad beauties lounging on overstuffed soft leather furniture.
The perfect spot for a college-age birthday party (so long as Daddy fronts the cash) or to put back a few before a night of dancing, ESL boasts a drink list as cutting-edge as its glow-in-the-dark neon blue bathroom sinks. Try beer cocktails such as Pretty Young Thing (Pabst Blue Ribbon, pink lemonade and a squeezed lemon), flutes like Trust Fund (vodka infused with Louis Roderer and served with peach nectar and fresh raspberries rolled in sugar) and its signature drink, a good old-fashioned Mickey's Malt forty wrapped in a brown paper bag.
Sip and schmooze or groove to funky indie and techno beats in the dancing area. Stay late and you just may never make it to the other area hotspots. Just don't get tangled in the beaded curtains after one too many Happy Ending martinis.
