Believing that training in exercises that are considered "arts" goes beyond working out to actually develop holistic wellness, Energy Fitness offers both classes and personal training in a range of disciplines from kung fu to hip-hop dancing. Students rave about the personalized attention they get from their instructions and the friendly staff, who work hard to maintain a comfortable neighborhood feel.
Classes: If you're hoping to slim down/buff up on a deadline, EF claims its functional fitness program, which combines aerobic conditioning, strength training, core conditioning and flexibility exercises, is the quickest way to get in shape, with noticeable results in just a couple of weeks. Instructors also offer Shaolin Kung Fu classes for ages 3 and up (taught by Chinese monks), which are held at Wells St. Athletic Club. Classes generally cost $20, with some available in series or sessions.
Extras: Personal training sessions are affordable; you'll pay $55 per session if you train once per week, and the rates go down from there. You can also train in a small group, if you'd like to work out with friends and save some cash.
