Editorial Review of Jerusalem Cafe

Despite the oddly upscale granite counter tops, Jerusalem Cafe is less about classy presentation than it is about fresh produce. It offers a step-above the fast-food-joint vibe, with a spic and span, albeit sterile, interior whose decor is limited to plastic grapevines wrapped around the lighting fixtures.

Nonetheless, the image of fresh apples, oranges and bananas piled behind the glass counter case are a sight for these California-native eyes. The fruit smoothies and fresh-squeeze juices number more than a dozen—from Power Kick (carrot and celery) and Sweet Booster (half-carrot and half-apple) to Sunshine Smoothie (orange and banana) and Mango Blast (banana, mango and milk).

The traditional Mediterranean appetizers and entrees are equally bountiful in terms of options and hardly come close to the $10 mark. The weekday lunch special is a steal: beef shish kabob, kifta kabob, shawarma and falafel with rice pilaf, salad and pita bread for $4.99. Otherwise it's smorgasbord of entrees, such as lamb, turkey, chicken and kifta (grilled and seasoned beef and lamb, minced onion and parsley) kabobs, which all come as sandwiches as well; salmon; and the vegetarian combo plate, (replete with grape leaves, Lebanese and tabouleh salads, baba ghannoush, hummus and pita). Cutting down on carbs by substituting vegetables for rice will cost you...one dollar.

It's a counter-order operation, with ample seating both indoors and outdoors. Or share the goods with your friends and family at home by taking advantage of the delivery or catering option.

Average cost: <$10
