Mashing up an Orwellian dystopia with Chicago's proudest Super Bowl moment? Who else but the Factory? This shameful good time of a theater company, which never met a bad joke it couldn't make us love, slobbers all over da Bears. Delighted local critics say that "1985" (that's one year away from 1984) is XX times more fun than we deserve. Get more details...

Chicago's favorite BYOB burlesque show invites you to bring your hooch down to the Playground for a little hoochy-koo. When Raven announced its 09/10 lineup ("Salesman," "12 Angry Men" and "The Odd Couple") we thought "How many dude-centric chestnuts can you bore us with in a season?" But, as the response to "Salesman" proves, great acting in a great play can never bore. Critics say the production is flawless, and the principals heart-breaking. Rave, we're sorry we doubted you. If someone tells you that women aren't funny, march that person right over to the Book Cellar for an evening of cupcakes and comedy. On second thought, don't. More cupcakes for the rest of us. This informal evening of sharp stand-up features a rotating cast of Chicago's best female jokers.Critics praise the cozy, sugar-fueled feel and the hosting skills of ringleader Kelsie Huff. Neil Labute offers what's sure to be a nuanced and surprising look at the fallout of September 11th. Profile Theatre's obsession with this reasonably facile provocateur has made its seasons a little one-note of late, but whether you love or hate the 'Bute, you have to admit that this company does his scripts proud. With Darrell W. Cox and Cheryl Graeff as lovers left reeling by something bigger than their problems. Get more details...

Tickets: $10-$25
Closes: Runs Through Dec 19
The English refuse to celebrate Christmas without the panto, a hybrid form of family theater that is musical, nonsensica, and always features a dude in a dress. The Piccolo Theatre's locally baked version of the holiday pudding, around since 2003, will charm you and your sprogs into submission with its sugar-shocked dumbness. This year, Piccolo serves up a version of "Perseus and Medusa," a Greek myth with considerably more cross-dressing than is classical. Get more details...
Company: Victory Gardens
Venue: Victory Gardens Biograph Theater
Performances:  Wednesday 7:30 p.m., Thursday 7:30 p.m., Friday 7:30 p.m., Saturday 3 p.m. & 7:30 p.m, Sunday 3 p.m.
Tickets: $35-$45
Closes: Runs Through Dec 27
Victory Gardens' completely non-denominational holiday-tradition-in-the-making returns for its fourth year. "The Snow Queen" is more of a prog-folk concept-album concert than a play. But it's by far the best prog-folk concept-album concert you'll see this decade. Hans Christian Andersen's tale of Gerda, a little girl on a quest to save her best friend from the titular Frigidaire, is told through dance, puppetry and above all, Michael Smith's gorgeous, joke-filled, heart-rending songs. The on-stage band is led by Smith himself, performing like some sly hybrid of Johnny Cash and Santa Claus. Get more details...

A priest, a rabbi and a Wiccan want to toast the winter season together. Where should they go? Over to Redmoon Central for that rare holiday spectacle which neither celebrates nor mocks any religion. Instead, the "Winter Pageant" brings us the grand parade of the seasons, taking the audience through a surreal office summer, a cozy hibernation and a glorious spring. Critics called the 2008 version of this show (which evokes everything from Joseph Cornell boxes to your most extravagant dreams) Redmoon at its otherworldly best. Get more details...
